Circulation Assistant

Primary Responsibility: The Circulation Assistant is responsible for all aspects relating to circulation transactions and operations during the evening hours. This position provides administrative support in the Circulation area and assists the Resource Sharing/Circulation Specialist as needed.

 

Essential Duties: 

 

Circulation Functions

  • Assists with daily circulation reports and statistics. 
  • Maintains accurate circulation records.
  • Maintains records of items received, stored, issued, and returned. 
  • Accounts for all money received at the circulation desk. 
  • Instructs patrons on how to use resources, primo, and automated information systems.
  • Answers routine inquiries and refers patrons in need of professional assistance to reference librarians.
  • Assists in maintaining a Circulation manual and updating policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Locates library material for patrons.
  • Takes necessary action to deal with disruptive or problem patrons.
  • Generates monthly circulation statistics to provide accurate data necessary for the library’s quarterly and annual reports.  
  • Assists with inventory and weeding.
  • Assists in the training of Library Staff, Federal and International Work Studies and Library Practicum Students on circulation policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the Library Strategic Plan initiatives 

 

Departmental Assistance Functions

  • Assists with interlibrary loan functions in the absence of the Document Delivery Specialist. 
  • Assists in the maintenance of books, periodicals, newspapers, and audiovisual material.
  • Assists in the process of new materials including books, audiovisual materials, and computer software.
  • Assists other Library departments as needed.

 

Miscellaneous

  • Contributes quarterly to the Library’s newsletter “More Than Books”
  • Participates in library displays and programs on a rotating basis.
  • Participates in professional opportunities.
  • Contributes to the library social media outlets monthly.
  • Represents the Library at University-wide functions and participates in campus-wide events. 

 

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Participates in Library Staff meetings.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Some college coursework preferred.  
  • Library experience preferred.  
  • Ability to type 30 words per minute.
  • Knowledge of filing and record-keeping is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products helpful.  
  • Excellent customer service skills a must.  
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations while maintaining a businesslike manner.  
  • Maintains positive teamwork atmosphere by communicating in a friendly and effective manner with others.
  • Must be flexible to accommodate organizational needs.  
  • Must be able to work with standard office equipment such as computers, photocopying machines, computers, scanners, and printers.  

 

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a normal library environment
